Admins: learn more about Managing Duty Interruptions.

Interruptions are used to adjust driver schedules for any unplanned day-to-day occurrences. Interruptions should be used if drivers are not able to start a duty on time, need a break, or a vehicle will be temporarily out of service.

The Watchlist feature will help you to monitor vehicles on the Live Map.

How to use

There are two ways to set up an interruption:

  1. Live Map: select an active vehicle, then select Actions, then Add Interruption.

  2. Duty Schedule: View Duty, then select Edit Interruptions, then Add Interruption.

To create your interruption, you'll need to choose:

  1. Start Time - Choose "ASAP" for immediate start or "For Later" to schedule the interruption.

    • For duties that have not started, the interruption must be For Later, not ASAP.

    • If you are creating a new Interruption so that a driver can have an earlier break, you should cancel the existing break before you create the new one to minimize disruptions to the manifest.

  2. Duration - Set the interruption length in minutes. You can use the quick buttons, or set a custom length of time.

    • Interruptions can be cancelled before they start, or ended early while they are in progress, by pressing cancel on the interruption.

    • Tip: If you need to re-create an Interruption to change the time, cancel the existing break before creating the new one to reduce disruptions to the manifest.

  3. Reason - Select from the dropdown menu.

If riders are currently onboard, you'll see the option to automatically manage their ride(s) (covered in the next section). Add any relevant notes and click "Add Interruption" to confirm. Once added, the system will handle the schedule adjustments for you. Trips will be reassigned to available duties as possible. The system will optimize to minimize delays while respecting the interruption period.

Note: if adding an Interruption has caused any rides to go into Unmatched status, there will be an alert icon next to Live Requests.

Managing Riders

You will only be required to select one of these options if there are currently riders onboard.

You will only be required to select one of these options if there are currently riders onboard.

  • If drivers can wait a short time for their break, choose “Start interruption after drop-offs”.

  • If the vehicle (or driver) cannot drop off onboard passengers, typically due to a breakdown or accident, choose “Start now and rematch riders". The engine will send an available vehicle to pick up the rider(s) from the original vehicle’s location.

FAQs

When should I use an interruption vs. pausing a vehicle?

Always use interruptions. Pausing should only be used in rare cases where a specific vehicle must complete a specific trip, regardless of optimization.

Can I add an interruption to a vehicle that hasn't started its duty?

Yes. Create an interruption "for later" on a scheduled duty before it begins. You can do this by setting the Earliest start time.

What happens to scheduled trips during an interruption?

The engine will automatically reschedule affected trips and reassign them to available vehicles. If no vehicles are available, the trips will go into an unmatched status.

Can I edit an interruption after it has started?

No, but you cancel an interruption at any time, whether it's active or scheduled. The elapsed Interruption time will still be counted towards your metrics.

What's the difference between a "Break" and other interruption reasons?

Breaks (including scheduled breaks) are now just Interruptions with the Break reason and are tracked separately in reporting to maintain compatibility with existing NTD requirements.

How far in advance can I schedule an interruption?

You can schedule interruptions for any point during an active duty using the "For Later" option when adding the interruption.

What if I need to add a reason that's not in the list?

Contact your Spare representative to add new interruption reasons through the Organization Settings.
