Overview

Spare connects to your existing fleet systems and brings that data directly into your operations platform β€” no duplicate entry, no switching tools. Odometer readings, fuel levels, fault codes, and live vehicle locations sync automatically, so your team can act on real data instead of chasing it.

What is telematics?

Telematics refers to the systems that collect and transmit data from vehicles using GPS, onboard sensors, and wireless connectivity. In transit operations, this typically includes vehicle location, driver activity, vehicle performance, safety events, and trip progress.

How telematics integrations work in Spare

Spare connects to your telematics provider and normalizes the data into a consistent format across your fleet. That means you get the same experience in Spare whether you run Geotab, Samsara, or a mix of both.

When to use telematics integrations

Telematics integrations are especially valuable if you already have GPS or fleet tracking systems in place, operate a mixed fleet with different providers, need real-time visibility for dispatch, or want to improve safety monitoring.

Supported integrations

Spare organizes integrations into three categories. Each provider connects through a standardized API, so data flows consistently regardless of which vendor you use.

πŸ“GPS & Telematics

  • Geotab β€” Real-time and historical vehicle locations, trip data, driver profiles, safety events (speeding, harsh braking, crashes), fault codes, HOS logs, odometer, fuel level, and engine runtime

  • Samsara β€” Live vehicle locations, driver activity, safety events, HOS data, vehicle diagnostics, and fuel usage metrics

  • Verizon Connect β€” Vehicle location, trip history, driver behavior data, and idle time reporting

  • Omnitracs β€” Vehicle location, HOS compliance data, driver messaging, and trip reporting

  • ISAAC Instruments β€” Real-time vehicle location, driver activity, safety event capture, and onboard device management

β›½ Fuel Cards

  • WEX β€” Fuel transaction data including gallons purchased, cost per gallon, merchant location, and driver ID

  • Comdata (FLEETCOR) β€” Transaction-level spend data, merchant details, and card authorization activity

  • Fuelman (FLEETCOR) β€” Purchase amounts, station location data, and driver-level transaction history across 50,000+ preferred fuel sites

  • AtoB β€” Fuel quantity, cost per fill, merchant location, and vehicle tank level at time of transaction

  • Coast β€” Real-time transaction data, merchant category codes, and spending control events via Visa fleet card

    and more.

  • Geotab β€” Fuel level readings, odometer data, engine runtime, and fuel consumption stats via onboard telematics

  • Samsara β€” Fuel usage logs, MPG by vehicle, idle time, and efficiency metrics

  • Fleetio β€” Fuel entries, cost-per-mile data, and maintenance records from fleet management software

Available Data in Spare

Spare supports live data updates from connected telematics systems, enabling live vehicle tracking on maps, improved dispatch awareness, and faster response to service disruptions.

After connecting a provider, Spare can ingest and display the following data types:

Asset data

  • Real-time vehicle locations

  • Historical GPS tracking

  • Vehicle and driver profiles

Operational data

  • Trip and route activity

  • Vehicle utilization

  • Fleet status

Safety and performance

  • Safety events (harsh braking, speeding, and similar)

  • Vehicle diagnostics and performance indicators

Fuel data

  • Odometer readings and fuel levels

  • Fault codes

  • Fuel transaction records (where supported by provider)

All data is normalized so it can be used consistently across different providers.

Limitations and considerations

  • Available data varies by provider

  • Update frequency depends on provider capabilities

  • Some providers may limit historical data access

How to connect a telematics provider

Watch the walkthrough below, or follow the steps to connect your provider in a few minutes.

To add a new integration:

  1. In the EAM module, go to Settings in Spare

  2. Select Integrations

  3. Click Add Integration

  4. Click Continue

  5. Search for your provider by name
