Push to Talk (PTT) is a built-in communication hub that connects dispatchers and drivers instantly — replacing legacy radio systems, personal phone calls, and fragmented tools with one unified, recorded channel inside the Spare Platform. It works for both Demand Response and Fixed Route operations.

With PTT, agencies eliminate the need for personal phone numbers, gain a complete record of all dispatch-driver communication, and can handle emergencies faster with one-tap alerts.

💡 Push to Talk is currently in closed beta. Talk to your Spare representative to learn more.

Key Capabilities

Push-to-Talk Voice

Send voice messages with one tap. Dispatchers and drivers can communicate instantly without phone calls, hold times, or personal numbers. Voice messages are recorded and stored alongside the full conversation history.

Two-Way Text Messaging

Exchange text messages between dispatch and drivers in real time. All messages are saved and visible to the whole dispatch team, so nothing gets lost when shifts change.

Emergency Alerts

Dispatchers or drivers can trigger a safety alert with a countdown confirmation for urgent situations. Emergency alerts cut through all other activity and notify dispatch immediately.

Silent Alarm

Drivers can discreetly alert dispatch without speaking — critical for situations where a rider's behaviour makes it unsafe to make an audible call. The silent alarm notifies dispatch without any sound or visible indication on the driver's side.

Broadcast Messaging

Send an announcement to all drivers or a specific fleet at once — useful for road closures, detours, weather alerts, or end-of-shift reminders.

Quick Reply Templates

Drivers can respond instantly with pre-built messages like "On my way!" or "Running late" — reducing distraction while driving and speeding up routine communication.

Unified Conversation Queue

All driver messages appear in one place in Spare Operations, filtered by fleet, with new and reviewed status. Dispatchers no longer need to monitor multiple channels or tools — everything is in one queue.

Live Map Integration

PTT is woven into the dispatch workflow on the Live Map — dispatchers can communicate with a driver directly from the map without switching screens or losing fleet context.

For Dispatchers

PTT is accessible throughout Spare Operations — from the Live Map, trip lists, and driver detail pages. The unified conversation queue shows all active driver conversations in one view, with unread indicators so nothing gets missed.

To send a voice message, select the microphone icon next to a driver and hold to record. To send a text, select the message icon and type or choose a quick reply. To broadcast to the whole fleet, use the broadcast option in the conversation queue header.

All communication — voice, text, and alerts — is recorded and timestamped, giving dispatchers a full audit trail for any incident or review.

For Drivers

PTT is built into the Spare Driver App. Drivers can receive and send voice messages, read and reply to text messages, and trigger emergency or silent alarms — all without leaving the app.

Quick reply templates let drivers respond to common dispatcher messages with a single tap, keeping communication fast and safe while on the road.

💡 The Spare Driver App currently supports Push to Talk on Android only.
