Run an Inspection as a Mechanic (EAM Mobile App)

Start an inspection in the EAM mobile app, whether your home screen shows work orders or just an inspection card, and fill in the checklist.

Written by Product Team

The EAM mobile app lets you inspect any vehicle or piece of equipment, whenever you need to.

How you start one depends on what your account can do. Some people see a list of work orders when they open the app; others see nothing but an inspection card. Both can inspect — they just get there differently.

Which home screen do you have?

What you see when you open the app

How you start an inspection

A list of work orders

Tap Start Inspection in the bottom row of buttons, or scan the barcode on the vehicle.

A single Start Inspection card

Fill in the card, or scan the barcode on the vehicle.

💡 You do not choose this — it follows the permissions your administrator has given your account. If you think you are seeing the wrong one, ask them to check your access.

If you see work orders

Your home screen lists the jobs assigned to you. Inspections are separate from that list, so there is a dedicated button for them.

Tap Start Inspection in the bottom row

It sits along the bottom of the screen, next to Home, Add Issue and Scan. This is the quickest way in when you already know which vehicle you need.

You are then asked for the vehicle, and then the checklist. Both steps have a search box.

If you only see a Start Inspection card

Some accounts have no work orders at all — inspections are the whole job. The home screen is a single card, and the row of buttons along the bottom is shorter: just Home and Scan.

The card asks for two things, in order. Pick the vehicle first; the checklist field only appears once you have, because which checklists are on offer depends on the vehicle you chose.

If a vehicle has only one checklist set up for it, the app fills that in for you. When both boxes are filled the button turns solid green.

Starting from the barcode instead

If your vehicles have barcodes, this works whichever home screen you have, and skips the searching entirely.

Tap Scan, point the camera at the barcode on the vehicle, and the app identifies it for you. When the vehicle comes up, choose Start Inspection from the options offered, then pick your checklist as normal.

💡 Scanning is usually the fastest route on the shop floor, because you never have to type or remember a fleet number.

Filling in the checklist

From here everything is the same, whichever way you started.

Odometer and hour readings

The app shows the last reading it has, and will not accept anything lower. If the meter is broken or you cannot read it, tick Void reading rather than guessing.

When something fails

Tap Fail. The check turns red and is marked Failed. If your organization asks for evidence on a failure, a comment box and a photo button appear, and you will need to fill one in before you can finish.

Groups of checks

Some items list several faults together. Tick the all-clear option if everything is fine, or tick the specific faults you found — each one you tick asks for its own note or photo.

Signatures

Sign on the pad and confirm. The signature is saved onto the inspection.

Finishing up

Tap Complete Inspection. If your organization records parts used on inspections, you can add them here, or carry on without.

The Post-Inspection Summary appears straight away. It is worth reading rather than dismissing, because it shows everything your inspection just set in motion.

  • Urgent Failures Detected — your organization’s warning, if you failed something critical.

  • Asset Status — change the vehicle’s status here, for example straight to out of service.

  • Issues Created — one Issue per failed check. Tick them and tap Create Work Order to start the repair right now.

If you get interrupted

A part-finished inspection is kept for you. An Inspections in Progress card appears on the home screen.

Tap it to see what is waiting and pick up where you left off.

If the app shows an out-of-date checklist

💡 The app keeps a local copy of your organization’s settings. Tap the gear icon, choose Refresh Data and confirm, then open the inspection again.
